Parent Update 3rd ELA
Last week in 3rd grade reading and English, we started working on conjunctions. They did an interactive lesson on them, and practiced them independently. They have also been working on the whole writing process from start to finish, which was completed last week. In class, we continued on in our whole class novel, How to Eat Fried Worms. Lastly, i introduced them to a new website called Storybird, which is creative writing based on artwork. 4th ELA Last week in 4th grade reading and English, we finished out whole class novel, Holes, we watched the movie, and compared the two against each other. In addition to finishing our novel, they learned their next figurative language concept, hyperboles, and they finished their unit 10 Greek and Latin words. 5th ELA Last week in 5th grade reading and English our huge focus was speech contest. They finished organizing, started writing, and we had a couple of guest middle school speakers come in and give their speeches as examples. Besides speeches, we continued on in our whole class novel, Island.

Parent Update 3rd ELA
Last week in 3rd grade reading and English, we started a new whole class novel called How to Eat Fried Worms. We continue to focus on character analysis, in their independent novel, in our class novel, and through video. They are writing descriptive paragraphs about their families, and we are really breaking down how to revise and edit them the proper way. Lastly, they enjoyed watching the Spelling Bee and a Valentine's Day project. 4th ELA Last week in 4th grade reading and English, they received Unit 10 Greek and Latin root words. They continue learning different figurative languages, last week it was alliterations, and as they learn them, they find them in our whole class novel as well as practice independently in class. Lastly, they enjoyed a Feel Good Friday with ELA centers. 5th ELA Last week in 5th grade reading and English, they received Unit 10 Greek and Latin root words. We continue to recap figurative language, and read our whole class novel. The biggest focus for the next 3 weeks will be speeches. We are in the research and organization process. Some of the middle school students will be coming to give their speeches, so they can hear good examples. Lastly, they enjoyed a Feel Good Friday with ELA centers. Parent Update 3rd ELA
Last week was a short week because of our wonderful Wisconsin weather. We are continuing to work on characterization and practice for the Spelling Bee, which will be held in class on Wednesday. We are also going to be starting a new whole class novel soon! 4th ELA Last week was a short week because of the Wisconsin weather. Fourth graders are working on figurative language, we have been continuing on in our whole class novel, and we have been practicing for the Spelling Bee, which will be held in class on Wednesday. 5th ELA Last week was a short week because of the Wisconsin weather. Fith graders have been reviewing figurative language that they learned last year. We have been continuing on in our whole class novel, which is a series, and we have been practicing for the Spelling Bee, and that will be held in class on Wednesday. Last week in 3rd grade reading and English, 3rd graders had an interactive notebook lesson on character analysis. We will continue to practice learning about how authors develop characters through this week. Students have been practicing word families, possessive nouns, and analogies. They learned the root word, cycl, and lastly, they enjoyed a Feel Good Friday in the gym. 4th ELA Last week in 4th grade reading and English, students focused on prepositions and prepositional phrases. They made posters that show relationship between two objects, which is the definition of a preposition, and then wrote sentences with prepositional phrases in them. The 4th graders also are diving into non-literal language, and they had an interactive notebook lesson on similes. We continue to read our hole class novel, Holes, and we will be practicing for the Spelling Bee, which is coming up in February. Lastly, they enjoyed a Feel Good Friday with ELA centers. 5th ELA Last week in 5th grade reading and English, students focused on prepositions and prepositional phrases. They made posters that show relationship between two objects, which is the definition of a preposition, and then wrote sentences with prepositional phrases in them. The 5th graders also are also practicing usuing complete answers on homework assignments, this includes putting question words back into answers. We continue to read our hole class novel, Island, and we will be practicing for the Spelling Bee, which is coming up in February. Lastly, they enjoyed a Feel Good Friday with ELA centers. 3rd ELA
Last week in 3rd grade reading and English, we had a short, but good week. As we got back into the swing of things, we recapped some of the concepts from before break, and also dove right into a new lesson. We are currently working on possessive nouns, and we continue to read nonfiction text to figure out the text structure. This week, we will also be talking about the spelling bee, which 3rd graders get to participate in for the first time. 4th ELA Last week in 4th grade reading and English, we had a short week, but they were still introduced to new Greek and Latin root words, we practiced prepositions, and we worked hard on editing skills in writing. On Friday, they enjoyed "Chill Out" by reading in the gym and drinking hot cocoa to kick off our Read to Succeed program. This week we will be talking about the Spelling Bee which will be coming up in February, but we will start to practice in class. 5th ELA Last week in 5th grade reading and English, we had a short week, but they were still introduced to new Greek and Latin root words, we practiced prepositions, and we worked hard on editing skills in writing. We also listened to more of our whole class novel, Island. This week we will be talking about the Spelling Bee which will be coming up in February, but we will start to practice in class. Last week in 3rd grade reading and English, we finished watching Because of Winn-Dixie, the movie, and we compared the movie to the book. They worked very hard to practice their informational text structures with partners. We continue to work on all parts of speech, but with a focus of pronouns. On our writing day, they were taught how to create paragraphs from their brainstorm, and we did this in the computer lab to also work on their typing skills. Friday, they had their mentor sentence quiz, and enjoyed one small activity for Feel Good Friday. 4th ELA Last week in 4th grade reading and English, students were introduced to our new whole class novel, Holes. Our new novel is about a group of kids that get sent to the desert to dig holes to build character. We are still focusing on story plot, and they watched Charlie Brown Christmas in order to practice. On our writing day, they were trying to finish up Anthology projects, and those that were finished had a Christmas tic-tac-toe writing board. Lastly, they enjoyed a Feel Good Friday after their mentor sentence quiz. 5th ELA Last week in 5th grade reading and English, students were introduced to our new whole class novel, Island. Our new novel is about 6 troubled kids that get sent on a boating trip in order to build character. We are still focusing on story plot, and they watched Charlie Brown Christmas in order to practice. On our writing day, they were trying to finish up Anthology projects, and those that were finished had a Christmas tic-tac-toe writing board. Last week in 3rd grade reading and English, we finally finished our whole class novel, Because of Winn-Dixie, and we compared the book to the movies to see what differences we could find. They were introduced to a new Greek and Latin root word, -ology. In the middle of the week, they were put into partners and they practiced informational text structures. We recapped pronouns, and lastly, they continued working on their Anthology projects which are due before winter break. 4th ELA Last week in 4th grade reading and English, they were introduced to their new Greek and Latin root words, all about movement. We practiced story plot by watching the classic, Hanzel and Gretel. On our writing day, they focused on the editing process by fixing sentences with a partner, then looking at their own writing and correcting using the CUPS (capitalization, usage, punctuation, spelling) method. They had an interactive lesson on prepositions, continued working on their Anthology which is due before winter break and lastly, enjoyed a Feel Good Friday with ELA centers. 5th ELA Last week in 5th grade reading and English, they were introduced to their new Greek and Latin root words, all about sight and touch. Last week in 3rd grade reading and English, we started diagramming a couple of sentences everyday to help remember parts of speech. With parts of speech, we had an interactive notebook lesson on pronouns and we will continue to practice them throughout this week. Students learned about a certain type of word relationship, called analogies, and they loved them! We continue to work on our Anthology project, we started practicing the writing process again, and we continued on in our whole class novel. 4th ELA Last week in 4th grade reading and English, students took their quiz on Unit 6 Greek and Latin Root words, and we found we needed to recap and practice state of being verbs by playing a interactive game. We had a lesson story plot, students continued to work on their Anthology project, and on our writing day, we focused in on revising their own paragraphs. Lastly, they enjoyed a mini Feel Good Friday due to our PBIS assembly. 5th ELA Last week in 5th grade reading and English, students took their quiz on Unit 6 Greek and Latin Root words. As a class we finally finished our whole class novel, and since it is a series some students have already taken it upon themselves to continue on with the next books, which is great to see! We had a lesson story plot, students continued to work on their Anthology project, and on our writing day, we focused in on revising their own paragraphs.
