3rd ELA
This week in 3rd grade English and Reading, we have been working on nonfiction text. They read an informational article about the Titanic. As the students read they learned about parts of a nonfiction book, such as, table on contents, index, visual aids, etc. We also read survivor stories, and they watched a couple of clips on how the Titanic sunk. They really enjoyed this mini unit and several of them looked up facts and books on the Titanic on their own. Greek and Latin root words have been a focus for the last couple of weeks, so they looked up words with the root audio (sound) and did an activity on those words. They also continue to work on conjunctions, and they enjoyed a Feel Good Friday. 4th ELA This week in 4th grade English and Reading, they received a new Greek and Latin root word unit, which they created a Quizlet on in order for them to practice. We have also been working on informational text structures by practicing picking out key words in order to determine how to tell the difference between them. Last week they had a mini lesson on independent and dependent clauses, which we continue to work on and practice this week. Lastly, they enjoyed a Feel Good Friday on Friday. 5th ELA This week in 5th grade English and Reading, they received a new Greek and Latin root word unit, which they created a Quizlet on in order for them to practice. parent update 3rd Grade ELA
This week in 3rd grade Reading and English class, they learned words with the Greek root word aqua. They were able to look up the words and figure out how they related to each other and what they had to do with water. We focused on our parts of speech, they had an interactive notebook lesson on conjunctions, they read a story called Sarah and the Bear and different reading skill were practiced, such as analyzing character feelings, and lastly we started Forward testing this week, so that has been taking up some of our class time. On Friday, they enjoyed a Feel Good Friday with mini ELA centers. 4th Grade ELA This week in 4th grade English and Reading class, the Greek and Latin roots words that were presented to them last week continued to be studied through this week and they had a quiz on them Friday, we focused on parts of speech, they had an interactive notebook lesson on informational text structures, which they will be practicing next week. Figurative language was recapped and they practiced by playing a Kahoot, then independently practiced. On Friday they enjoyed a Feel Good Friday, and since Forward testing has started, that has taken some of our class time. 5th Grade ELA This week in 5th grade English and Reading class, the Greek and Latin root words that were presented tot hem last week continued to be studied through this week and they had a quiz on them Friday, we focused on parts of speech, as a class, we have continued reading of whole class novel, Island, which is the second book in the series. This week in 3rd grade Reading and English, students had a mini lesson on simple subjects and simple predicates. They continue to work on parts of speech almost everyday. Because Dr. Suess's birthday was last Friday, they had started a parts of speech project that they finished this week. We continue to work on looking up vocabulary from our classroom novel, Charlotte's Web, as well as read from it. Lastly, they enjoyed a Feel Good Friday. 4th ELA This week in 4th grade Reading and English, students finished up their Unit 8 Greek and Latin root words and took the quiz on them. They had an interactive notebook lesson on onomatopoeia which concludes our figurative language lessons.They will continue to practice figurative language throughout the rest of the school year. Since it was Dr. Suess's birthday last Friday, they started a project with Dr. Suess books and figurative language last week that they finished up this week, we continue to read out of our classroom novel, Holes, and lastly, they enjoyed a Feel Good Friday. 5th ELA This week in 5th grade Reading and English, students finished up their Greek and Latin Root words and took the quiz on the. They had an interactive notebook lesson on onomatopoeia words, which is the last figurative language concept they are going to learn about, however, they will continue to practice them throughout the school year. We have been work hard on writing and practicing their speeches that will be given in class at the end of the month, our classroom novel, Island, is almost finished, and lastly, they enjoyed a Feel Good Friday. 3rd ELA
This week in 3rd grade Reading and English, students had an interactive notebook lesson on characters, we are practicing characters with our whole class novel, Charlotte's Web, as well as their independent novels. They also had a chance to participate in their first ever spelling bee. We had a preliminary round in class to see what three students would participate in the school wide spelling bee on Monday. Vocabulary has also been a main focus for our whole class novel. They are learning to look up words, change the definition into their own words, or look at the synonyms, and find a picture to go with the word. Lastly, on Friday they enjoyed a feel good Friday with mini ELA centers. 4th ELA This week in 4th grade Reading and English, 4th graders took their Unit 7 Greek and Latin root word quiz, and they participated in the preliminary round to see who is going to be moving on to the school wide spelling bee. We had an interactive notebook lesson on alliteration, as they have been learning and practicing figurative language. In class, we are continuing on in our whole class novel, Holes. On Friday they enjoyed a Feel Good Friday with ELA centers. Lastly, they have been having a good time participating in "Olympic Games" everyday in spirit of the 2018 Winter Olympics. 5th ELA This week in 5th grade Reading and English, 5th graders took their Unit 7 Greek and Latin root word quiz, and they participated in the preliminary round to see who is going to be in the school wide spelling bee. They had an interactive notebook lesson on alliterations, as they have been learning and practicing figurative language. In class, we are continuing on in our whole class novel, Island. This is the first year they will be participating in the school wide speech contest, and we have been working on researching and writing their speeches. This week in third grade Reading and English, students practiced a close read where the had to read a passage, find answers, create questions, and use the text as evidence in order to complete the tasks. They practiced parts of speech by highlighting nouns, verbs, and adjectives in sentences, and they are continuing to work on figuring out vocabulary words using their context clues. On Friday, they enjoyed a Feel Good Friday by watching a Make A Wish video and enjoyed centers. 4th ELA This week in fourth grade Reading and English, students worked on metaphors. We have been working on similes and metaphors and analyzing song lyrics with both similes and metaphors in them. We finished unit 5 Greek and Latin root words, and took a quiz on the words. We will be starting unit 6 next week. They also had to make a pic collage about their idea summer camp, as an introduction to our next whole class novel. Each student shared them in front of the class, and we will be starting the novel next week. On Friday, they enjoyed a Feel Good Friday with a Make A Wish video and centers. 5th ELA This week in fifth grade Reading and English, students worked on metaphors. In third grade Reading and English, this week we continued to focus on simple, compound, and complex sentences. They practiced a close read by finding evidence in the text, independently they working on their Anthology projects, as a class we read our whole class novel together, and they were introduced to Santa's Tracker by Google. This has different games, coding practice, and challenges for the students. Lastly, the enjoyed a feel good Friday by rolling skating a little bit longer and had ELA centers. 4th ELA In fourth grade Reading and English, this week students continued working on action, helping, and linking verbs. They were able to move along with their Anthology projects and our whole class novels, which we are almost done with. When we went into the lab, they were introduced to Santa's Tracker on Google, and we practiced using Google docs. Lastly, they enjoyed a feel good Friday by watching Dude Be Nice, and participating in ELA centers. 5th ELA In fifth grade Reading and English, this week students continued working on action, helping, and linking verbs. This week in third grade Reading and English, we focused on character traits. Students used their inferring skills along with our interactive notebook lesson on traits to finish an independent practice with task cards. We revisited simple, compound, and complex sentences. They had to identify the difference between each sentence and then create sentences of their own in all of the three forms. As a class, we continued on in our Because of Winn-Dixie novel, they got a chance to explore Epic, a reading app on their iPads, and lastly they enjoyed a feel good Friday by participating in centers. 4th ELA This week in 4th grade Reading and English, students received a new unit of Greek and Latin root words to practice, we revisited the four types of sentences where they practiced independently, and we are continuing to work on our story devices: foreshadowing, flashback, cliffhanger, and suspense. As a class, we are continuing on in our Number the Stars book, they were introduced to Epic, a reading app in their iPads, and they enjoyed a feel good Friday by watching a Dudebenice clip and participating in centers. This week in 3rd grade Reading and English, students had an interactive notebook lesson on simple, compound, ad complex sentences. We practiced them as a whole class and they practiced them independently as well. The next whole class novel we are reading is called Because of Winn-Dixie. As we read the novel, we talk about different reading strategies, and this week we started looking at how authors create different characters. The Anthology project is a contest throughout southeastern Wisconsin offered to 3rd through 5th graders, it is new to 3rd graders this year, and we started looking into this year's theme which is: What's Inside. This will be a project we are working on in school from now until winter break. 4th ELA This week in 4th grade Reading and English, students had an interactive notebook lesson on interrogative, imperative, exclamatory, and declarative sentences. We practiced as a whole group and they practiced independently. The next whole class novel we are reading is called Number the Stars. It is a historical fiction novel that takes place in Denmark during World War II. As we read the novel we are looking at different story devices that the author uses. This week, they learned about foreshadowing, suspense, cliffhangers, and flashback. Lastly, they started working on their Anthology project. This year's theme is: What's Inside. This is an in school project we will be working on from now until winter break. 5th ELA This week in 5th grade Reading and English, students had an interactive notebook lesson on interrogative, imperative, exclamatory, and declarative sentences. This week in 3rd grade Reading and English, we focused on summarizing short stories, picking out main events in a story, and making sure they are in order of beginning, middle, and end. We continue to work on subject and predicates of a sentence as a whole class and they started to practice independently. They also enjoyed a couple Halloween activities and centers on Friday. 4th Grade ELA This week in 4th grade Reading and English, we have been focusing on prefixes, suffixes, and root words and will continue to do that throughout second quarter. They also have been working on apostrophe practice, specifically possessive nouns. As a class we practiced them and they will be working on them independently next week. Number the Stars is our next whole class novel we will be reading, which we started this week. Lastly, they enjoyed a couple Halloween activities and centers on Friday. 5th Grade ELA This week in 5th grade Reading and English, we had our chapter 4 Greek and Latin root word quiz. They had two interactive notebook lessons, one on how readers learn about characters and one on apostrophes. We specifically worked on possessive nouns, which we will continue to do through next week. Our next whole class novel is Among the Hidden, which we started this week. Lastly, the had a couple of Halloween activities and enjoyed centers on Friday. ****Reminders: Our classroom basket theme is rainbow. This week in 3rd grade English and Reading, students had a lesson on summarizing. We practiced together as a class, then they practiced with books from the library in partners, and they will continue to practice independently next week. They also had an interactive notebook lesson on subjects and predicates in a sentence. Lastly, we finished our whole class novel, Mouse and the Motorcycle, and they enjoyed centers on Friday. 4th Grade ELA This week in 4th grade English and Reading, we focused on finishing up our classroom novel and practicing plot. Using their classroom novel, they had to pick out the exposition, rising action events, climax, falling action events, and resolution. Along with typing up their events, they had to find pictures and make a poster out of all of it. They had an interactive notebook lesson on apostrophes, and lastly, they enjoyed centers on Friday. 5th Grade ELA This week in 5th grade English and Reading, we focused on finishing up our classroom novel, Frindle, and practiced plot within Frindle. They practiced by making a poster with all of the elements of plot along with pictures. Greek and Latin roots vocabulary words were reviewed and we will be having a quiz on those next week. They had an interactive lesson on apostrophes, and will be practicing possessives next week in class. Lastly, they enjoyed centers on Friday! |
