Parent Update November 19 3rd ELA
Last week in 3rd grade reading and English, they were introduced to a new Greek root word, which was "phone", meaning sound. We continued to practice informational text structures, read our whole class novel, break apart sentences to understand parts of speech, and build sentences to practice subject and predicate. Lastly, they worked very hard Thursday and Friday to get a Thanksgiving Day coloring and writing project done. 4th ELA Last week in 4th grade reading and English, we finished our whole class novel, and we will be starting our next novel after Thanksgiving break. They were introduced to their new set of Greek and Latin root words, we continued to practice informational text structures, and figured out some analogies in class. Thursday they worked very hard to finish and complete the writing process in one class period. They wrote about what they are thankful for, and lastly, they enjoyed a Feel Good Friday with centers. 5th ELA Last week in 5th grade reading and English, they were introduced to their new set of Greek and Latin root words, we continued to practice informational text structures, read a couple chapter out of our whole class novel that we are almost finished with, and figured out some analogies in class. Thursday they worked very hard to finish and complete the writing process in one class period. They wrote about what they are thankful for, and lastly, they enjoyed a Feel Good Friday with centers.

Parent Update Week of October 22nd 3rd ELA
Last week in third grade ELA, students started learning about prefixes, suffixes, and root words. We continue to work on parts of speech, with a focus right now of recognizing the difference between action and state of being verbs. In class, together, we have also been practicing making inferences everyday. They are finding out it takes a lot of practice, but they are getting very good at making the inferences. Lastly, we read a couple chapters out of our whole class novel, Because of Winn Dixie. 4th ELA Last week in fourth grade ELA, students finished their Unit 3 Greek and Latin root words, took the quiz, and will be getting ready for a new set. We started practicing inferences again, to refresh their memory from last year, and apply it to our whole class novel, Number the Stars. We have been working on action, helping, and linking verbs, along with verb tenses, and lastly, they enjoyed a Feel Good Friday with centers after their mentor sentence quiz. 5th ELA Last week in fifth grade ELA, students finished their Unit 4 Greek and Latin root words, took the quiz, and will be getting ready for a new set this week. We started practicing inferences again, to refresh their memory from last year, and apply it to our whole class novel, Among the Hidden. They are learning and working on the writing process by brainstorming, creating an outline, and drafting. This week we will work on revising and finally publishing their work. We have been working on action, helping, and linking verbs, along with verb tenses, and lastly, they enjoyed a Feel Good Friday with centers after their mentor sentence quiz. Parent Update Week of October 15th 3rd ELA In 3rd grade ELA, we are continuing to practice some skills we learned last week, and as we continue to practice inferences, we started to add a holiday flare. The inferences this week were based on Halloween costumes. We are also continuously working on our writing process. Right now, I have been giving them topics to pick from, and they have to prewrite/brainstorm and from there they create sentences. 4th ELA In 4th grade ELA, students received new Greek and Latin root words, they continued to practice helping, linking, and action verbs, and they are still working on the beginning part of the writing process, getting from pre-writing to creating an outline to drafting. We read a couple chapters out of our whole class novel. Number the Stars. Last week in 3rd grade ELA, students practiced common and proper nouns, singular and plural nouns, and verbs. They had an interactive notebook lesson on inferences, and we will be practicing them everyday. We also continued on in our whole class novel, Because of Winn-Dixie, with the chapters that we read, students practiced answering comprehension questions by using their questions words back in their answers. 4th ELA Last week in 4th grade ELA, students took their Greek and Latin root word quiz and will be getting new words on Monday. They practiced helping, action, and linking verbs in a fun and interactive way. As a class, we practiced the beginning steps of the writing process by turning their brainstorms into outlines and writing from them. Lastly, they enjoyed a feel good Thursday by doing ELA centers. 5th ELA Last week in 5th grade ELA, students took their Greek and Latin root word quiz and will be getting new words on Monday. They practiced helping, action, and linking verbs in a fun and interactive way. In third grade ELA this week, they had an interactive notebook lesson on verbs, which they practiced in their notebook with the whole class, and they will independent practice as we move through next week. We also started our whole class novel called, Because of Winn Dixie. It is about a girl who finds friendship in a stray dog. Last week they had a reading lesson on plot, so we reviewed and practiced with classic stories, such as, Little Red Riding Hood. Lastly, we are still working on and practicing the writing process. 4th ELA In fourth grade ELA this week, students had an interactive notebook lesson on helping, linking, and action verbs and point of view. We practiced as a whole class, and they will practice independently as we move through next week. We started our whole class novel called Number the Stars, which is about a Danish girl and her family living during World War II. Lastly, they are learning to write an outline after brainstorming, as part of the writing process. 5th ELA In fifth grade ELA this week, students had an interactive notebook lesson on helping, linking, and action verbs and point of view. We practiced as a whole class, and they will practice independently as we move through next week. Unit 3 Greek and Latin root words were still being practiced this week, quiz on Monday. We started our whole class novel called Among the Hidden, which is about a third child that has a law against him, but finds other third children that are like him. Lastly, they are learning to write an outline after brainstorming, as part of the writing process. The Writing ProcessThis week in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade ELA we have been working on the writing process. First we talked about it, then we took notes, and finally we practiced. This will be a process they will be practicing throughout the entire school year.
Week of May 14 parent update 3rd ELA
This week in 3rd grade Reading and English, student learned their new Greek and Latin words focused on "the study of". They discovered words that have the root, "ology". We also went to the lab to practice opinion writing and computer skills. They learned how to properly space, change font, center text, and correct words if they are misspelled. Our school also started MAPS testing this week which took up some of our class time, and lastly, they enjoyed ELA centers to wrap up the week. 4th ELA This week in 4th grade Reading and English, they continued to practice their Unit 12 Greek and Latin roots that focused on words that have to do with pairs and the number two. They took their quiz on these words Friday, and will be getting Unit 13 next week. Last week they had a lesson on independent and dependent clauses, which we recapped and practiced again this week. Going hand in hand with clauses comes out subordinating conjunctions that they also refreshed their memory on. In the lab last week, they created review games which the whole class participated in this week. This week all students started MAPS testing which took some class time, and lastly, they enjoyed a Feel Good Friday with ELA centers. 5th ELA This week in 5th grade Reading and English, as a class, we are nearing the end of our last whole class novel. Students had a quiz on the last few chapters we read this week. Last week, they had a lesson on independent and dependent clauses, so they reviewed and practiced that concept again. In the lab last week, they created a review game for all of the students to try, which we did in class this week and everyone enjoyed. They continued practicing their Unit 12 Greek and Latin root words, and took their quiz on the words Friday. Lastly, they enjoyed a Feel Good Friday with ELA centers. |
